Election materials have been delivered to 185 polling centres ahead of Thursday’s by-election in the Thakurgaon-1 constituency under the 13th parliamentary election cycle.

The distribution began on Wednesday morning under tight security. Voting will take place from 8am to 4pm on October 29 without interruption.

At around 10am, presiding officers received ballot papers, ballot boxes and other election materials at the Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School ground.

The materials were then transported to their designated polling centres under the escort of law enforcement personnel.

Police, the SRB, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Ansar members were deployed to ensure security during transportation, with additional measures taken along major roads and key points in the town.

According to the election office, the constituency has 185 polling centres: 113 in Thakurgaon Sadar, 33 in Ruhia and 39 in Bhulli.

Presiding officers said they checked the materials against official lists and checklists before taking them to their respective centres. Preparations are under way to set up booths and complete other arrangements for voting.

Thakurgaon Election Officer and Returning Officer Kamrul Islam said the materials had been distributed to all 185 centres and that preparations for the election were continuing.

The constituency has 515,853 registered voters, including 257,219 men, 258,630 women and four third-gender voters. A total of 287 voters—249 men and 38 women—have registered to vote by postal ballot.

Five candidates are in the final contest following the withdrawal of BNP district vice-president Obaidullah Masud on October 5. They include BNP candidate Mirza Faisal Amin and Delawar Hossain, representing Jamaat-e-Islami and like-minded parties.

The by-election was necessitated by the vacancy in the Thakurgaon-1 seat following Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s election as president on August 20. The winner of Thursday’s vote will become the constituency’s new member of parliament.
