A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for actor Ashraful Haque, popularly known as Don, who was arrested in a murder case filed over the death of popular Bangladeshi film actor Salman Shah.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order on Thursday (August 27) after a hearing. Don was brought to the court premises from jail in the morning.
CID investigation officer Inspector Md Mojibur Rahman sought a seven-day remand to interrogate Don. After hearing both sides, the court granted a five-day remand.
The CID said interrogating Don in police custody could help uncover important information about the circumstances surrounding Salman Shah’s death. Investigators also hope to obtain information about the whereabouts of other people allegedly involved in the case and facilitate their arrests.
The investigation agency also said Don needs to be questioned about how, why and at whose instigation he allegedly attempted to flee abroad despite being barred from leaving the country.
Meanwhile, different groups of Salman Shah fans staged a human chain on the court premises demanding justice for the actor’s death and the arrest of all those accused in the case.
The protesters carried two banners, one of which read: “Our beloved hero has been in his grave for 30 years. Why are his killers still free?”
Masud Rana, one of the participants, told Jago News that the principal accused, including Samira, Aziz, Lucy and Rizvi, as well as other fugitives, should be arrested immediately. He also demanded that Don be interrogated on remand.
Another participant, Mousumi Haque, called for a fair investigation through Don’s interrogation in custody. She also demanded the immediate arrest of Samira and other accused persons and urged the authorities to ensure justice.
On August 9, immigration police detained Don in the early hours near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. He was produced before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court the same day, and the court ordered that he be sent to jail. His bail petition was later rejected.
Salman Shah died on September 6, 1996. Initially, an unnatural death case was filed with Ramna Police Station over his death.
After a lengthy legal process, on October 20, 2025, Dhaka’s Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Jannatul Ferdous Ibn Haque allowed a revision petition filed by the complainant and ordered that the incident be treated as a murder case.
The following day, October 21, Salman Shah’s maternal uncle Mohammad Alamgir filed a murder case with Ramna Police Station.
