The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has sought a seven-day remand of actor Ashraful Haque Don, who was arrested in a case filed over the alleged murder of popular film actor Mohammad Shahriar (Imon), better known as Salman Shah.
In its remand petition, the CID described Don as “extremely shrewd and cunning.”
Ramna police General Registration Officer (GRO) Sub-Inspector Md Shah Alam confirmed the matter to reporters on Monday (August 24).
He said CID Inspector Md Mojibur Rahman filed a petition seeking a seven-day remand of Don before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana on August 20. The court fixed August 27 for the remand hearing in the presence of the accused.
The investigating officer cited three reasons for seeking Don’s remand.
The first reason was that the case concerns the much-discussed and sensational death of popular actor Salman Shah. Since the incident in 1996, demands for an impartial investigation have continued, including through newspapers and social media.
The investigator said that taking Don into seven-day police custody for intensive questioning could help uncover the actual circumstances surrounding the case.
The second reason cited was that Don is “extremely shrewd and cunning.” The CID said that intensive interrogation in police custody could help determine the whereabouts of other alleged accomplices and facilitate their arrest.
The petition also said remand was necessary to determine why and at whose instigation Don had allegedly attempted to leave the country through various means despite a travel ban imposed on him in connection with the case.
The CID arrested Don on August 9 while he was travelling to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. He was later produced before a court, which denied him bail and sent him to jail.
According to sources, Don was subject to a travel ban because of the Salman Shah murder case. After immigration authorities alerted the CID, the agency took him into custody while he was attempting to travel to Saudi Arabia for Umrah.
Salman Shah died at his residence in Eskaton, Dhaka, on September 6, 1996. His death was initially described as suicide, but a murder case was later filed. Several individuals have been named at different stages of the investigation.
On October 20, 2025, Mohammad Alamgir Kumkum, maternal uncle of Salman Shah, filed the case with Ramna Police Station on behalf of Salman’s mother, Neela Chowdhury, accusing 11 people, including Samira Haque.
The other accused are Samira Haque’s mother Latifa Haque Lucy, businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, actor Ashraful Haque Don, David, Javed, Faruk, Ruby, A. Sattar, Saju and Rezvi Ahmed alias Farhad.
