The funeral prayer for seven Bangladeshis from Naogaon who died in a fire at a sofa manufacturing factory in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was held together on Friday.
The funeral was held at 10:15am at the Molla Azad Memorial College ground in Atrai upazila of Naogaon.
The bodies of nine identified victims of the fire arrived in Bangladesh at around 4pm on Thursday. Seven of them were from Atrai upazila. With the assistance of the administration, the bodies reached Atrai at around 1:30am.
Naogaon-6 lawmaker Sheikh Mohammad Rezaul Islam Rezu, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Monirul Islam, Atrai Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Moniruzzaman, Atrai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Alam, other officials and local residents attended the funeral.
After the prayers, the bodies were handed over to the victims’ families, who then left for their respective villages.
Lawmaker Rezu said the families had received assistance from the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board and would receive further government support. The process of bringing the remaining bodies home is also underway.
According to the list provided by the Saudi embassy, the seven victims from Naogaon are Md Farid of Udanpai village, Rubel Pramanik, Mohan Ali, Suman Ali and Kalimuddin of Gondogohali village, Sohel Rana of Dubai village, and Abdul Jalil Sardar of Parkasunda village in Atrai.
