The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested an Indian national with a foreign-made pistol, ammunition and yaba tablets in Barlekha upazila of Moulvibazar.
He was arrested from the Kumarshail border area of the upazila on Thursday night.
The arrestee, 35-year-old Bolai Namashudra, is a resident of Gobindapur area under Latu police station in Karimganj district of India’s Assam state.
Separate cases have been filed against him under relevant sections of the law. He was sent to jail through the court on Friday afternoon.
According to the BGB, a special patrol team of the Biyanibazar Battalion launched an operation on Thursday night (August 27) after receiving information that an Indian smuggling gang was entering Bangladesh through the Kumarshail border area with drugs and illegal firearms.
When the smugglers sensed the presence of BGB personnel, they opened fire at them. The BGB members returned fire in self-defence, prompting the smugglers to flee the scene. At one point, BGB personnel chased them and managed to arrest an injured Indian smuggler.
A foreign-made pistol, two rounds of .22-calibre ammunition and 500 yaba tablets were recovered from his possession.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Ataur Rahman Sujon, commander of the Biyanibazar Battalion (52 BGB), said the arrested man was involved in a cross-border smuggling network. The recovered firearms and drugs had been brought into Bangladesh for distribution, he said.
The arrested man was handed over to Barlekha Police Station, and the BGB filed a case in connection with the incident. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the other members who fled the scene, the BGB commander added.
Barlekha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman Khan said on Friday afternoon that the BGB had handed over an Indian national to the police after arresting him with 500 yaba tablets, two rounds of ammunition and a pistol-like weapon.
He said the BGB had filed a case and the accused was sent to jail through the court on Friday afternoon.
