A total of 605 people, including a BNP leader, a former Supreme Court judge, a former army officer, lawyers, businesspeople and Islamic scholars, have joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
They joined the party at a programme held at the Muktijoddha Smriti Auditorium of the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) in Kakrail, Dhaka, on Tuesday afternoon.
The event was organised by Jamaat’s Dhaka South city unit as part of its month-long public outreach campaign.
Jamaat Ameer and Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman welcomed the new members by presenting them with flowers and Islamic books.
Among those who joined Jamaat are Yakub Sarker, joint convener of the BNP’s Bangshal thana unit; former judge Syed Shahidur Rahman; senior Supreme Court lawyer ASM Khalekuzzaman; former army officer Colonel Faruk Hossain; former police superintendent Obaidul Haque; and former national footballer and former UN official Selim Ahmed.
Several businesspeople, BNP and Jubo Dal leaders, Islamic scholars and community figures also joined the party.
Addressing the gathering, Shafiqur Rahman said Jamaat would not compromise with what it considers falsehood and would not bow to anyone.
He also urged party workers to remain prepared to face criticism, obstacles and even personal sacrifices while pursuing their political activities.
