OpenAI’s popular artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT experienced a widespread outage on Thursday, September 3, leaving users in several countries unable to access the service.
Users reported problems with logging in, loading chats and receiving responses on both the web and mobile versions of ChatGPT. Some users also encountered error messages while trying to use the platform.
The disruption also affected other major AI platforms, including Anthropic’s Claude and xAI’s Grok, while users reported issues with Google’s Gemini as well.
Outage-monitoring platform Downdetector recorded a sharp rise in reports of problems with the services.
OpenAI acknowledged elevated error rates affecting ChatGPT and Codex and said its technical teams were investigating the problem.
The exact cause of the outage was not immediately clear, and it was also unknown whether the simultaneous disruptions affecting multiple AI platforms were connected.
The incident caused inconvenience for millions of people who increasingly rely on AI tools for work, study, coding and other daily tasks.
