The US Embassy in Dhaka has warned Bangladeshi travellers holding B1/B2 visitor visas against engaging in activities that are not permitted under the visa category.
In a social media post on Saturday morning, the embassy clarified several activities that are prohibited for people travelling to the United States on B1/B2 visitor visas.
The embassy said travelling to the US to give birth for the purpose of securing US citizenship for a child, commonly known as “birth tourism”, is not permitted under a B1/B2 visitor visa.
The visa also does not authorise travellers to undertake employment for which they receive payment from a US employer or business.
Similarly, studying in the US for the purpose of obtaining a degree or institutional academic credit is not permitted under a B1/B2 visitor visa.
The embassy also stressed that visitors cannot undertake paid employment while in the US under this visa category.
The B1/B2 visa is generally intended for temporary business activities, tourism, visits to family or friends, medical treatment and other permitted short-term purposes. Travellers are required to comply with the conditions attached to their visa while in the country.
The latest warning follows another advisory issued by the US Embassy on 22 August, when it cautioned Bangladeshi students about compliance with the conditions of their student visas.
In that warning, the embassy said a student visa could be revoked if a student worked outside the permitted conditions, stopped studying, was regularly absent from classes or withdrew from an educational programme without informing the institution.
The embassy’s latest message is part of its broader reminders to Bangladeshi travellers and students about complying with US visa rules and maintaining valid immigration status while in the country.
