The summer movie season is winding down with a relatively quiet weekend at the box office, as Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to remain No. 1 for a sixth consecutive weekend.
The film is projected to earn about $22 million over the four-day weekend. It has already surpassed $900 million domestically, becoming only the second film to reach the milestone after Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which holds the current record at $936 million. Brand New Day is expected to overtake that mark soon.
Globally, the film has grossed more than $2.33 billion, making it the third-highest-grossing movie of all time, behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, now in its eighth weekend, is expected to finish second with about $16.4 million, taking its domestic total to roughly $588.1 million through Monday.
Among the weekend’s new releases, Paramount’s By Any Means is projected to earn around $7 million. The true-crime drama stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as an FBI agent investigating the killings of civil rights leaders in 1960s Mississippi, alongside Mark Wahlberg as a mob hitman.
A24’s Onslaught, directed by Adam Wingard, earned $782,000 on Friday and is expected to gross around $2 million for the weekend. The action thriller stars Adria Arjona as a military veteran protecting her daughter from killer super soldiers and currently holds a 54 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
