The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given in-principle approval to a proposal to import 18 cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from TotalEnergies through the direct procurement method to meet the country’s urgent gas demand.

The approval was given at a meeting held at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday, chaired by Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

Under the approved proposal, Bangladesh will import two LNG cargoes every month from October 2026 to June 2027, totalling 18 cargoes.

The contract will also include a provision allowing Bangladesh to purchase additional LNG cargoes, if necessary, subject to mutual agreement between the two parties.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Division placed the proposal before the committee.

The decision to import LNG through the direct procurement method on an urgent basis comes amid concerns over energy security and an unstable geopolitical situation resulting from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
