Steps will be taken to arrest and bring back to Bangladesh seven convicts, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, if their whereabouts are traced, International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Aminul Islam said on Tuesday.

“As they have now been convicted, if we can identify their locations, effective measures will be taken to arrest them and bring them back to Bangladesh,” he said.

The chief prosecutor made the remarks at a press briefing at his office in Dhaka following the tribunal’s verdict sentencing the seven to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July-August 2024 uprising.

Aminul Islam said the charges against Quader and the other six had been proved beyond doubt and expressed satisfaction over the verdict.

On the confiscation of assets, he said the government would identify the convicts’ assets, take them under its control and arrange for the sale of the confiscated property, with proceeds distributed as compensation to those killed and injured during the July uprising and their families through the July Foundation or another statutory body.

He said half of the assets of the relevant convicts would be confiscated in accordance with the tribunal’s order.

The chief prosecutor said the convicts would have 30 days to appeal after the verdict is published. No confiscation or other enforcement action would normally be possible during the appeal period, but there would be no legal barrier to implementing the verdict after the 30-day period expires.

The other six death-row convicts are Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Arafat, banned Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, its General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, banned Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and its General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan.

The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of 50% of the movable and immovable assets of Nasim, Arafat, Parash and Nikhil. Proceeds from the sale are to be provided as compensation to those killed and injured in July-August 2024 or their families through the July Foundation or another statutory institution.

The prosecution was led by Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Aminul Islam and other prosecutors. Lawyers M Hasan Imam and Ishrat Jahan represented the absconding accused during the proceedings.

The International Crimes Tribunal delivered its first verdict in cases involving crimes against humanity during the July-August 2024 uprising on November 17, 2025, sentencing ousted prime minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death.
