A plane crash in Florida, near US President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, killed all nine people on board on Sunday, officials said.

The private jet, a Learjet 60, crashed into a residential neighbourhood near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County at around 12:50 pm local time.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft had departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was heading to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the deaths, describing the incident as a “horrific tragedy”.

The crash site was located around seven miles (11 kilometres) from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene following the crash, while local authorities closed sections of Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North to facilitate rescue and investigation operations.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation, with support from the FAA.

Authorities had yet to determine the cause of the crash or publicly identify the victims.
