Police have arrested Imon Bhatt, president of the Noakhali district unit of the banned Jubo League.
He was arrested around 8 p.m. on Tuesday (September 15) from his residence at Bhatt Kutir in Ashram Para, Ward No. 1 of Noakhali Municipality.
Imon Bhatt is the son of Dukhaharan Bhatt of the same area. He has served as president of the Noakhali district Jubo League since 2022. Previously, he served as president and general secretary of the district Chhatra League before becoming general secretary of the district Jubo League.
According to local sources, Imon Bhatt went into hiding after the Awami League government fell on August 5, 2024. He returned home from Dhaka on Tuesday morning to see his nine-month-old daughter Ichchhe, who was ill. Police later arrested him at night.
Police said Jubo League leaders and activists held a procession in the White Hall area of Noakhali Municipality on Monday morning. Imon Bhatt has been accused of financing the procession. A day later, police conducted a raid based on a tip and arrested him.
Sudharam Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam confirmed the arrest. He said Imon Bhatt is accused of financing a procession by Jubo League activists and faces eight cases, including one under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Police are also investigating whether there are any other cases against him.
He will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
