Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become the highest-grossing film in North American box office history, earning $936.773 million domestically in 47 days and surpassing the previous record held by Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens.
The Sony Pictures superhero blockbuster overtook the 2015 Star Wars film, which had grossed $936.6 million in North America.
Brand New Day has also become the fastest film to cross every major domestic box-office milestone from $400 million to $900 million. It currently ranks third on the all-time global box-office chart, behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.
“Doesn’t get bigger than this,” the film’s official Instagram account said in a message thanking fans for helping the movie make cinematic history.
Starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man, the film is produced by Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal also star.
Released on July 31, Brand New Day led the domestic box office in its first six weekends. It previously surpassed Avengers: Endgame to become the second-highest-grossing film in North American history before taking the top spot.
The film has broken several other records, including the biggest domestic opening weekend with $360 million and the highest-grossing first week in domestic box-office history. It also became the second-fastest film to cross $1 billion globally, behind Endgame.
The film’s success helped make the summer the highest-grossing season in global box-office history, with $4.765 billion in total ticket sales, surpassing the previous record set in 2013.
Sony Pictures film chief Tom Rothman previously said the studio chose to take a deeper approach to the character rather than simply trying to make the film bigger than 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which featured the returns of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as previous versions of Spider-Man.
No Way Home now ranks fourth on the all-time North American box-office chart.
