Jatiya Sangsad member from Kushtia-2 constituency Md Abdul Gafur has issued a statement after his son-in-law Mizanur Rahman was arrested in connection with an alleged attack at New Guinea Housing.

Gafur, a Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker, described reports surrounding the arrest as “false, baseless and motivated”, saying an attempt had been made to politically tarnish his and Jamaat’s image by linking the incident to the party.

In the statement, Gafur said he had noticed reports published by several newspapers and media outlets, including Amar Desh, claiming that Mizanur Rahman was arrested from his personal residence in Matikata, Dhaka.

He said the claim was completely false, as he had no personal residence in Matikata and stayed at the government-allocated NAM Bhaban.

Gafur also denied having any personal or political involvement in the matter, saying Mizanur’s dispute was entirely personal and business-related and had no connection with Jamaat.

According to the MP, Mizanur had a long-standing business relationship with New Green Properties and had been seeking payment of outstanding dues from the company.

He claimed that after the company’s owner Saiful Islam allegedly failed to pay the dues, Mizanur took legal action and filed a case with a police station.

Gafur said Saiful subsequently paid part of the outstanding amount but later filed a counter-case against Mizanur to avoid paying the remaining dues. He claimed the counter-case was later dismissed after being found to be false.

The Jamaat MP further claimed that Mizanur had no involvement in the recent vandalism or other unwanted incident.

He alleged that Saiful had deliberately created a fabricated incident and conspiracy to divert the issue.

Gafur said attempts to give a political colour to a private business dispute and link it to Jamaat were aimed at gaining political advantage and damaging the party’s image.

He also alleged that an “interested quarter” was using the media to create confusion, tarnish his and Jamaat’s image, and conceal the actual facts.

Earlier on Monday afternoon (September 28), a team from the Gulshan division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch arrested Mizanur Rahman, 59, during a raid in the West Matikata area.
