The government will introduce a new textbook titled Kheladhula (Sports) for fourth-grade students from the 2027 academic year, making sports education an integral part of the national curriculum, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque has said.

Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony of the BCC Administrator’s Cup Football Tournament at Poet Jibanananda Das Outer Stadium in Barishal on Tuesday, October 27, Aminul said the initiative would help build a healthy, disciplined and drug-free generation.

He said the introduction of the textbook marked the first time in Bangladesh’s history that sports would be made a compulsory subject through a dedicated textbook.

The book will cover different aspects of sports, including various sporting activities.

The initiative aims to encourage children to engage in physical activities, reduce their dependence on digital devices and protect them from drug abuse and other harmful social influences, the state minister said.

He expressed hope that sports would help foster unity across political and ideological differences and contribute to building a more cohesive society.

The government is also taking steps to develop sports as a professional career.

Aminul said initiatives such as sports allowances, sports cards and the Notun Kuri Sports programme were intended to identify talented young athletes across the country and develop them into national-level players.

He added that the government planned to establish a playground in each of the country’s 4,599 union parishads.
