Landslides kill 5 in Bandarban

At least five people, including a child, were killed in two separate landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains in Lama upazila of Bandarban early Thursday.

The first landslide struck Aziznagar Missionpara around 2:30am, burying a house and killing three members of the same family, including a child. Another landslide hit the area around 4:00am, claiming the lives of two members of a second family.

Local authorities and rescue workers recovered the bodies from beneath the debris.

Continuous heavy rainfall has heightened the risk of further landslides across the hilly district, prompting officials to urge residents living in vulnerable areas to move to safer places. Tourist attractions in Bandarban, including those in Lama, have also been temporarily closed as a precaution.
