Police have arrested three leaders of the banned Awami League from Mohammadpur in Dhaka, who were reportedly in hiding after August 5.
The arrested leaders are Abul Kalam Azad Mintu, general secretary of Ishwardi upazila Awami League and former mayor of the municipality; Shahidul Islam Ratan, president of Atgharia upazila Awami League and former municipal mayor; and Moklesur Rahman Mintu, former general secretary of Ishwardi upazila Awami League and former upazila chairman.
Mohammadpur police arrested them during a raid on the fifth floor of a building beside Priyanka Community Centre on Iqbal Road on Monday night.
Police said preliminary questioning had yielded several pieces of information about the three leaders.
According to police, they had travelled to Dhaka from Ishwardi and Atgharia in Pabna after August 5 and had been living in hiding.
Despite staying in the capital, they allegedly maintained regular phone contact with central Awami League leaders.
Police also said they had been working to strengthen party activities in their respective areas while in hiding in Dhaka. The three leaders face multiple cases.
Ishwardi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Asaduzzaman Asad confirmed their arrest in Dhaka. He said Abul Kalam Azad Mintu had gone into hiding after securing bail in a case related to the anti-discrimination student movement.
Moklesur Rahman Mintu and Shahidul Islam Ratan had been absconding since August 5, he added.
The OC said police were coordinating to bring the three arrested leaders from Dhaka to Ishwardi and Atgharia.
