Supporters of the BNP and the Awami League faced off in New York’s Jackson Heights on Sunday amid heightened tensions surrounding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to the United States.
The confrontation reportedly began after banners and posters put up by BNP supporters to welcome Tarique Rahman were allegedly torn down.
The incident sparked rival slogans and a tense standoff between the two groups near Itadi Bazar in Jackson Heights, a neighbourhood with a large Bangladeshi community.
New York City police deployed a large number of officers to the area and intervened to keep the groups apart.
The situation was brought under control without any major clash being reported. Police continued monitoring the area to prevent further trouble.
BNP supporters had gathered to welcome Tarique Rahman, who is travelling to New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Awami League supporters also gathered nearby and chanted slogans in support of their party.
According to local reports, the two sides exchanged slogans for around two hours, creating tension among local residents, businesses and passers-by.
Tarique Rahman is scheduled to arrive at John F Kennedy International Airport on Monday evening. BNP supporters and affiliated organisations have announced plans to gather at the airport to welcome him.
The Awami League, whose activities are currently banned in Bangladesh, has also announced protests during Tarique Rahman’s visit, according to local media reports.
