Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Tuesday accused the government of focusing on the “character assassination” of opposition leaders instead of addressing public hardship and rising crime.
In a post on his verified Facebook page, Shafiqur said people were struggling with soaring prices of essential commodities, while problems with gas and electricity supplies continued.
He also referred to the Detective Branch’s (DB) arrest of 84 people over alleged illicit activities at a house owned by an additional deputy inspector general of police. A large quantity of suspected narcotics was reportedly recovered from the property.
The opposition leader cited the incident as a sign of what he described as a deteriorating law-and-order situation, alleging increases in extortion, mugging, looting and armed robbery across the country.
He said the alleged activities at a property owned by a senior police official had raised serious public concerns.
Shafiqur concluded his post by calling on young people to rise once again, urging them to play a role in addressing the country’s challenges.
