DHAKA: The Jatiya Biplobi Parishad held a solidarity rally in front of the National Press Club in the capital on Tuesday, marking Kashmir Black Day and demanding that the future of Kashmir be determined through a plebiscite.
Speakers at the rally called for implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 47, adopted in 1948, which addressed the question of a plebiscite in Kashmir.
Addressing the rally, the organisation’s convener, Khomeni Ihsan, said Indian troops entered Srinagar on this day in 1947, depriving Kashmir of its independence.
The rights of Kashmiris were not a matter of charity or favour, but a question of their dignity, freedom and right to determine their own future, he said. If Kashmiris chose independence through a plebiscite, India should accept their decision, he added.
Ihsan said Kashmir had endured a severe humanitarian crisis over the past eight decades. Citing reports by UN human rights bodies, he alleged that Kashmiris had faced extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, custodial deaths, enforced disappearances, torture, rape and sexual violence at the hands of Indian security forces.
He called on Muslim-majority countries to unite to help end the alleged repression.
Ihsan also expressed hope that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would speak up for the rights of the Kashmiri people at the United Nations and other international forums.
Others who spoke at the rally included Pan Islamic Movement Chairman Advocate Mostafa Jamal Bhuiyan; Jatiya Biplobi Parishad Member Secretary Dr Nabil Ahmed; Assistant Member Secretary Abdus Salam; and advocates Saiful Islam Shuvo and Shah Ferdous Hasan Nazmul.
Nawab Salimullah Academy Chairman Md Abdul Jabbar and central convening committee members of the Jatiya Biplobi Parishad, including Md Saidul Islam and Selim Reza Bachchu, were also present.
