The US State Department has ordered ‘non-essential’ government employees and their family members stationed in Saudi Arabia to leave the country amid security concerns.
The department said Iran-backed Houthi forces had targeted civilian airports and critical infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, causing civilian casualties and disrupting aviation. It warned that the situation could deteriorate further.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the US Embassy said American government employees in Saudi Arabia must obtain special permission from the chief of mission before using any airport in the country following recent missile and drone attacks.
US officials have also warned American citizens about the risks of potential attacks on airports, airspace closures, flight cancellations and travel disruptions, urging them to exercise extreme caution while travelling.
