A 60-year-old rickshaw puller was critically injured after a car belonging to former Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief and retired Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Sibgat Ullah hit his rickshaw in Dhaka’s Paltan area on Saturday night.

The accident occurred around 8:00pm on October 31 on Box Culvert Road, near Paltan Tower, leaving the rickshaw puller, identified as Sultan, seriously injured.

According to police and local sources, pedestrians rescued Sultan from the scene and took him to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), commonly known as Pangu Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

The front portion of the former police official’s personal vehicle, bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-Gha-19-7077, was also damaged in the collision.

Police later seized the vehicle and took it to Paltan Police Station.

However, the driver was not found at the scene.

Local sources claimed that Sibgat Ullah’s son was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Police, however, said they had yet to establish the identity of the driver and were investigating the incident.

Paltan Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Shafiqul Islam said the vehicle had been recovered from the scene and taken into police custody.

Officer-in-Charge Mostafa Kamal Khan also confirmed that the injured rickshaw puller was receiving treatment at Pangu Hospital.

Police said they were looking into the circumstances surrounding the accident and would take necessary legal action.
