DHAKA: Formal charges have been filed against seven accused, including former minister Amir Hossain Amu and former prime minister’s adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, in a crimes against humanity case over offences committed during the July mass uprising.

The prosecution submitted the charges to International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Monday.

The other accused are former ministers Muhammad Faruk Khan, Shajahan Khan, Dipu Moni and Abdur Razzaq, and former lawmaker Mirza Azam.

Mirza Azam has not been arrested, while the other six accused are in jail.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim said the then government had suppressed the movement as a matter of state policy, while the Awami League and the 14-party alliance had taken political decisions to crush it.

He alleged that the accused, as influential figures and policymakers in the then government, had participated in, assisted, advised and contributed to efforts to suppress the movement.

As a result, he claimed, 1,400 protesters were killed and 25,000 injured during the July mass uprising. These are the allegations brought against the accused, he added.
