Former Shariatpur-1 lawmaker and Awami League organising secretary BM Mozammel Haque has been shown arrested in an attempted murder case filed over an attack on Mohammad Shamim Mia in the capital’s Bhatara area during the July student uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after a hearing on Monday afternoon (November 2), following an application by the investigation officer.

The development was confirmed by defence lawyer Liton Mia. Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman of Bhatara Police Station, the investigation officer, had filed the application on October 27.

Mozammel was brought to court from jail. State lawyer Harun Or Rashid argued in favour of showing him arrested, while defence lawyers, including Liton Mia, opposed the application.

After hearing both sides, the court ordered that Mozammel be shown arrested in the case.

According to the case statement, Shamim Mia joined a protest on the 100 Feet Road in Bhatara on July 19, 2024, when he sustained four bullet wounds in different parts of his body.

After receiving treatment, he filed an attempted murder case naming former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and several others.

BM Mozammel Haque was named as an accused in the case.

He is already behind bars after being arrested in several other cases.
