Nilphamari: Two people, including a seven-month-old infant, were killed and at least 12 others, including the bride and groom, were injured after a microbus carrying a newlywed couple crashed into a roadside ditch in Nilphamari’s Kishoreganj upazila.
The accident occurred at around 3:00 a.m. on Friday (July 17) in the Shaltibari area along the Kishoreganj–Tengnamari road, which connects to the Nilphamari–Rangpur regional highway.
The deceased were identified as seven-month-old Jibon Islam, son of Zikrul Islam of Bandarpara in Kochukata Union under Nilphamari Sadar upazila, and Riyad Islam, 20, son of Moza Mia. Riyad was an HSC examinee.
According to local residents and police, the wedding of Morsalin, son of Sirajul Islam from Bandarpara in Kochukata Union, and Sumaiya Akter, daughter of Sharif Mia from Keshaba village in Kishoreganj Sadar Union, was held on Friday night. After the ceremony, the bridal party was returning to the groom’s home with the bride in a microbus.
As the vehicle reached the Shaltibari area at around 3:00 a.m., the driver reportedly lost control, causing the microbus to plunge into a roadside ditch. The crash left at least 14 passengers, including the bride and groom, seriously injured.
Locals rescued the victims and took them to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared the infant and Riyad Islam dead. The remaining 12 injured passengers were later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Dr. Neel Ratan Deb, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, said that 14 injured people were brought to the hospital during the night. Two of them were pronounced dead, while the other 12 were transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital due to the severity of their injuries.
Kishoreganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Gafur said the bodies were handed over to the families after the completion of legal formalities. Police are handling the incident in accordance with the law.
