A trawler carrying 10 people sank in the Buriganga River after being hit by a passenger launch near Sadarghat in Dhaka on Sunday morning, leaving two individuals missing.
The incident occurred around 9:30am in the Shyambazar ghat area when the Sundarban-12 launch collided with a Cumilla-bound steel-bodied trawler, officials said.
According to Md Anwarul Islam, media inspector at the Fire Service and Civil Defence Directorate, a rescue unit from the Sadarghat River Fire Station has been working at the scene since 9:50am after receiving the report.
Preliminary information suggests the trawler had departed from Kodda Bazar in Gazipur and was heading to Muradnagar in Cumilla with 10 people on board.
The vessel reportedly lost engine power near Postogola Bridge shortly before the collision, leaving it stranded in the river.
Eight passengers managed to swim ashore, but two went missing after the boat capsized. Rescue operations are ongoing.
Officials said further details, including the identities of the missing and the cause of the collision, will be confirmed after the rescue effort progresses.
