Despite the formation of a high-level task force to complete the investigation into the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, the investigation report has yet to be submitted to the court.
As the investigation officer failed to file the report on the scheduled date, the court on Wednesday set August 27 as the new date for its submission.
With this, the deadline for submitting the investigation report has been deferred for the 128th time in the much-discussed case.
According to court sources, Wednesday was the scheduled date for submitting the investigation report in the high-profile murder case.
However, the investigation officer, Additional Superintendent of Police Md Azizul Haque of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), failed to submit the report within the stipulated time.
In the absence of the report, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam set August 27 as the next date for its submission.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Mazharul Islam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Prosecution Division confirmed the matter to Jago News.
He said the submission of the investigation report has now been deferred for the 128th time.
The journalist couple were murdered at their rented flat in West Rajabazar, Dhaka, on February 11, 2012, in the presence of their four-year-old son, Mahir Sarwar Megh.
The case was filed by Runi’s brother, Nawser Alam, with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Initially, the investigation was conducted by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police before being transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
However, the agency failed to submit the investigation report despite receiving 111 extensions over the years.
Following a High Court directive, the Ministry of Home Affairs formed a four-member task force in October 2024 to investigate the case after removing RAB from the probe.
