Dhaka University (DU) has taken an initiative to preserve graffiti painted on its campus during the July uprising and invited artists to participate in a programme titled ‘Rewrite’ to recreate and reinterpret the artworks.

The university authorities said the graffiti, which emerged during the movement, represent an important part of the country’s recent history, reflecting the aspirations, emotions and messages of students and people during that period.

As part of the initiative, DU aims to conserve the existing graffiti while engaging artists in presenting them in new and creative ways through the ‘Rewrite’ programme.

The authorities said graffiti are not merely wall paintings but also serve as historical records and a medium for expressing social thoughts and public sentiments.

Through the preservation and reinterpretation of these artworks, Dhaka University seeks to safeguard the memories and spirit associated with the July movement for future generations.
