The last surviving victim of a gas explosion in Dhaka’s Vatara area has died, raising the death toll to three after a leak in a household gas line triggered the blast earlier this week.
The deceased, Fahima, 21, passed away around 9:45pm on Saturday while undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Her husband Md Shaheen, 24, and their eight-year-old niece Hafsa had died earlier from injuries sustained in the same incident, meaning all three burn victims have now succumbed.
Resident Surgeon Dr Shawon Bin Rahman said the victims were admitted to the burn institute on July 21 with severe injuries following the explosion caused by a gas line leak. Fahima had suffered 45 percent burns and died while receiving intensive care.
According to hospital sources, Hafsa died shortly after midnight, while Shaheen passed away around 6:00am on Friday, within hours of each other.
The explosion occurred in the early hours of July 21 at a residence on the 300-Foot Road in the Natun Bazar area under Vatara Police Station. Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to the burn institute, where doctors fought to save their lives.
