The funeral of Rebati Sarker, a resident of Kaliganj in Satkhira, who was killed in a fire at Shikha Inn residential hotel in Kolkata, was held in India, while the body of another Bangladeshi victim, Alimuzzaman Saju, was repatriated to Bangladesh through the Bhomra land port and handed over to his family.
Rebati’s brother-in-law Tapan Sarker confirmed the information on Saturday. He said her funeral and cremation were held at Kolkata’s historic Nimtala Ghat on Friday, with the consent of relatives, as her children are staying in India. Her husband was also present at the ceremony.
Rebati had travelled to Kolkata with her husband for medical treatment when she was killed in the tragic fire.
Meanwhile, the body of Saju, from Moutala Union in Kaliganj, arrived in Bangladesh through the Bhomra land port at around 12:30pm on Saturday. Bhomra Immigration Police Officer-in-Charge Sajib Bala said the body was formally handed over to his relatives after completion of the necessary administrative procedures.
Saju’s elder brother Saheb Sardar received the body and took it to their village home in Bareya. Saju’s burial was scheduled to take place after Asr prayers on Saturday.
The fire broke out at the Shikha Inn hotel in Kolkata’s New Market area on Wednesday night, August 19, killing nine people, including seven Bangladeshis and two Indians.
