Three killed as bus crashes into stationary covered van in Feni

Three people were killed and another was injured when a bus of Unique Paribahan rammed into a stationary covered van in Chhagalnaiya upazila of Feni on Friday morning.

The accident occurred around 7am in the Chattogram-bound lane of the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, in front of Puratan Muhuriganj Daulatpur Government Primary School.

Fazilpur Highway Police said a covered van had been parked at the scene and efforts were underway to move it with the help of a long vehicle. At that time, a speeding Unique bus coming from behind crashed into the stationary van.

The covered van’s driver and helper, along with the bus driver, sustained critical injuries.

After receiving the information, a mobile team from Fazilpur Highway Police Station rushed to the scene and, with the help of locals, rescued the injured and sent them to Feni General Hospital. The on-duty doctors declared the three injured men dead. The other injured person is receiving treatment.

Police took custody of the three vehicles involved in the accident—the covered van, Unique bus and long vehicle.

Traffic on the highway remained normal after the accident, while legal proceedings were underway.

Fazilpur Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sub-Inspector Md Abu Noman told Kalbela that the covered van had apparently broken down at the scene. Its staff got down to move the vehicle by tying it with a rope to a long vehicle.

While they were attempting to move the van, the Unique bus hit it from behind. The impact caused the covered van staff to be thrown against the long vehicle, killing them at the scene, he said.

The identities of the deceased could not immediately be confirmed.
