MUNSHIGANJ: Four people, including a private car driver, were killed and another person was injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a private car in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj.
The accident occurred around 2:30pm on Saturday near Jamaldi Bus Stand on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway.
The deceased were identified as private car passengers Mujibur Rahman, 55, Shamima Akter, 45, Sabiha Chowdhury, 43, and driver Md Sohel, 30. All four were residents of the capital’s Gandaria area.
The identity of the injured person was not immediately known. The person was reportedly in critical condition and was sent to Dhaka for better treatment.
According to highway police and Fire Service officials, a passenger bus named-New Baleshwar-was travelling from Dhaka towards Chattogram. Meanwhile, the private car carrying the victims was returning to Dhaka after the passengers had eaten at a restaurant in the Jamaldi area of Gazaria.
The private car reportedly entered the highway through a median opening in the Chattogram-bound lane and attempted to cross into the Dhaka-bound lane. At that point, it collided head-on with the Chattogram-bound bus.
The impact left the private car badly mangled. The bus also overturned on the road while attempting to avoid the car.
Four people inside the private car, including the driver, became trapped. The driver died at the scene. Fire Service personnel later rescued the victims and took them to a hospital.
Gazaria Highway Police Station Inspector Md Moniruzzaman said the private car was travelling on the wrong side of the road and the accident occurred as it attempted to move into the Dhaka-bound lane.
He said police were investigating the exact cause of the accident and would take necessary legal action.
