The police have issued 12 directives for motorcycle and car drivers to prevent road accidents and ensure traffic discipline.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) made the announcement in a statement issued by its media and public relations wing on Thursday.
According to the statement, both motorcycle riders and passengers must wear standard certified helmets and comply with speed limits. Riders have been advised against speeding or racing, carrying valid driving licences, registration papers and other required documents, and making risky overtaking manoeuvres from the left.
Motorcyclists have also been instructed not to ride on footpaths or in the wrong lane, to keep headlights on at night and avoid excessive use of high beams. A motorcycle may carry a maximum of two people, including the rider, and carrying additional passengers is prohibited.
For car drivers, both the driver and front-seat passenger must wear seat belts. Drivers have been instructed not to use mobile phones in a way that distracts them while driving and never to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The police also directed drivers to obey traffic lights and signals, ensure that brakes, tyres, indicators and wipers are functioning properly before taking vehicles onto the road, and slow down at zebra crossings and designated pedestrian crossings to give pedestrians priority.
