A fire broke out at a residential hotel in Cox’s Bazar on Friday afternoon, prompting more than 300 tourists to evacuate safely. No casualties were reported.

The fire started at around 4pm in the ground-floor parking area of The Sea Princess Hotel near Sugandha Point in the coastal town on October 23.

The hotel was accommodating more than 300 tourists at the time of the incident.

They quickly left the building and moved to the nearby beach as smoke spread from the parking area.

A unit of the Fire Service and Civil Defence arrived at the scene and, with the help of hotel staff, brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes.

The fire damaged a generator and several other parts of the parking area.

Syed Mohammad Morshed Hossain, deputy assistant director of Cox’s Bazar Fire Service and Civil Defence, said a generator short circuit was suspected to have caused the fire.

However, the cause has yet to be confirmed.

Abdul Kader, managing director of The Sea Princess Hotel, said the hotel had adequate firefighting equipment and that the prompt response of its staff had helped prevent a major accident.

He added that all the tourists were safe.

The incident comes less than a week after a devastating fire at the Tuptup Resort in the Inani area of Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, killed 10 tourists on October 17.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over fire safety at hotels and resorts in the popular tourist destination.
