A student of International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) was killed after a lorry rammed into a minibus, causing it to overturn in Sitakunda on Tuesday morning.
The accident occurred around 9:30am in the Kumira area on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, in front of the university’s main gate.
The deceased was identified as Maisha Mushfirat, a student of the university’s English department.
University Proctor Professor Mostafa Munir Chowdhury told bdnews24.com that Maisha and a fellow student were waiting to board a local bus opposite the university gate when a lorry hit a Route No. 8 minibus from behind, causing it to overturn.
Maisha was trapped underneath the overturned vehicle. She was taken to hospital along with the other injured student, where doctors declared her dead. The second student received primary treatment at a private hospital.
Sergeant Shafiqul Islam Shuvo of Baro Awlia Highway Police Station said the lorry lost control while attempting to avoid a car making a U-turn on the Dhaka-bound lane. It then struck the minibus parked on the left side of the road.
Following the accident, university students blocked the highway in protest.
The blockade brought traffic on the Dhaka-bound lane to a complete halt, causing congestion on the Chattogram-bound lane as well.
