The government has waived agricultural loans, including accrued interest, for more than 1.43 million farmers across the country since assuming office, the finance minister told parliament on Sunday.
According to the government, the loans of 1,434,482 farmers who had borrowed up to Tk 10,000 were waived by July 2026.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury disclosed the information in response to a written question from opposition Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Md Ruhul Amin, who represents the Chuadanga-2 constituency.
The minister said the government had cleared Tk 13.53 billion owed to banks by the farmers under the loan waiver programme, covering both the principal and accrued interest.
Farmers in all upazilas across the country benefited from the programme, he added.
Responding to another question regarding the number of taxpayers in Chuadanga district, the finance minister said the district currently has 72,463 taxpayers registered with Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs).
Of them, 21,567 taxpayers submitted their income tax returns for the 2025-26 tax year.
