Jamaat to contest presidential election

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has decided to participate in the upcoming presidential election, with the opposition alliance expected to finalise its candidate at a meeting of the 11-party alliance on Sunday.

The decision was taken at a meeting of Jamaat’s Central Executive Council held at the party’s central office in the capital at 7pm on Saturday. The meeting was chaired by Jamaat Amir and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman.

According to a press release issued by Jamaat’s central publicity department, the meeting discussed the upcoming presidential election in detail before unanimously deciding to contest the polls.

The party has called a meeting of the top leaders of the 11-party alliance for Sunday, where a final decision will be made on nominating a candidate on behalf of the opposition.

Jamaat Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar and other members of the Central Executive Council attended the meeting.

The meeting also discussed the country’s overall political situation, constitutional reforms and various political programmes announced by the 11-party alliance, among other issues.
