A Dhaka court has shown former Jhalokathi-1 lawmaker Barrister Muhammad Shahjahan Omar as arrested in the murder case of local BNP leader Ishaq Jomaddar, who was shot dead during the anti-discrimination student movement in the capital’s Adabor area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam passed the order on Sunday (August 30) following a petition by the investigation officer, Adabor Police Station Sub-Inspector Mahesh Chandra Singh.

The former MP was shown arrested as a suspect in the case.

According to the case documents, Ishaq Jomaddar, 50, was the former organising secretary of Ward No. 30 under Adabor police area. He was shot during the protests on August 5, 2024, near the Shyamoli Club field in Adabor.

He was rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.

In his petition, the investigation officer alleged that indiscriminate firing was carried out against protesters on the instructions of then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina and senior Awami League leaders, resulting in Ishaq’s death.

The investigator said Shahjahan Omar needed to be shown arrested in the case to ensure a proper investigation and prevent him from securing bail and going into hiding.

The petition also stated that several other cases, including murder, corruption and explosives cases, are pending against Shahjahan Omar with New Market Police Station in Dhaka, Rajapur Police Station in Jhalokathi and other police stations.
