India is interested in rebuilding people-to-people relations with Bangladesh, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi said during a meeting with Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad in Dhaka on Wednesday (September 2).
During the meeting at the Speaker’s office, Hafiz said Bangladesh-India relations have experienced various ups and downs over the years and evolved according to changing circumstances.
He said people-to-people ties should form the foundation of bilateral relations, with both countries respecting each other’s sovereignty and independence.
Referring to Bangladesh’s political history, Hafiz alleged that the Awami League government undermined democratic rights through what he described as staged elections in 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024. He said the July 2024 uprising created an opportunity to restore democracy.
Hafiz also remarked that during Sheikh Hasina’s rule, Bangladesh-India relations were largely centred on government-to-government ties rather than direct relations between the two peoples.
Trivedi said the Indian government is working to rebuild people-centric relations and respond to the aspirations of the people of both countries.
The two sides also discussed parliamentary exchanges, the Rohingya crisis and rehabilitation, as well as sports and cultural cooperation.
Trivedi invited the Speaker to visit India on behalf of the Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha and underscored the importance of regular exchanges between parliamentary delegations of the two countries.
