Journalist and fiction writer Ehsan Mahmud has been appointed director general of the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum for a one-year term.

The Ministry of Public Administration announced the appointment in a notification issued by its Contract and Foreign Recruitment Branch on Wednesday (September 16).

According to the notification, Mahmud was appointed on a contractual basis under Section 12(2) of the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum Act, 2026. His one-year term will begin from the date he joins the post.

As a condition of the appointment, he must relinquish all other professions, businesses and employment with government, semi-government or private organisations. The order, signed by Deputy Secretary Md Golam Rabbani, said the decision was taken in the public interest.

Speaking after his appointment, Mahmud said the July Mass Uprising was an unforgettable chapter in Bangladesh’s history of democratic struggle against authoritarianism.

He said the museum was established to preserve the memory of the uprising, present its history to future generations and commemorate the sacrifices of those killed and those who took part in the movement.

Mahmud said he wanted to work with the lessons of July—democracy, equal rights and a secular Bangladesh—in mind.

He also expressed his intention to turn the museum into a national cultural and academic institution through collective efforts to preserve, promote and research the history of the July Mass Uprising.
