Bangladesh has strongly condemned a reported drone attack towards the holy city of Makkah Al-Mukarramah.
Saudi Arabia said its air defence systems intercepted a drone south of Makkah on Tuesday evening. The drone was destroyed before entering Makkah’s restricted airspace. The Houthis, however, denied targeting Makkah.
In a statement on Wednesday, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned reports of a drone attack targeting the holy city.
Bangladesh also reaffirmed its deep respect for the sanctity of Makkah Al-Mukarramah and other holy sites in Saudi Arabia, while expressing solidarity with the Saudi government and people in protecting these sacred places.
The statement stressed that the safety and security of holy sites must always be fully respected and ensured.
According to Saudi Gazette, the drone was intercepted around 6:50pm local time on Tuesday, south of Makkah.
It was reportedly the second alleged attempt to target Makkah by the Houthis. In July 2017, the group was accused of launching a ballistic missile towards the holy city. Houthi authorities have denied targeting Makkah or any other Islamic holy site.
