The government has approved the import of refined petroleum products worth Tk 12,537 crore to meet the country’s fuel requirements for the remaining three and a half months of the year.
The fuel will be imported from China’s Unipec and PetroChina and Indonesia’s BSP under government-to-government (G2G) arrangements.
The approvals were given at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase on Wednesday.
Separately, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gave policy approval for the direct purchase of 695,000 tonnes of gas oil and jet fuel for the same period.
The government’s decision comes amid growing pressure on global energy supplies linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Disruptions in imported gas supplies and declining stocks have already prompted Bangladesh to approve several LNG purchases without open tenders.
In August, the government approved the import of 22 LNG cargoes in two phases.
Earlier, on August 6, it approved eight LNG cargoes and 5,000 tonnes of LPG to meet emergency demand and help maintain market stability.
The Finance Ministry said the government also relaxed the existing requirement to procure refined fuel on a 50:50 basis through G2G agreements and international tenders.
Under the revised arrangement, the latest fuel imports will be sourced through G2G contracts from the state-owned companies Unipec, PetroChina and Indonesia’s BSP.
The ministry’s notification did not specify the volume of refined petroleum products to be imported under the Tk 12,537 crore allocation.
Bangladesh is facing additional pressure on energy supplies as disruptions in key regional shipping routes have complicated fuel transportation.
The situation has forced the government to seek alternative sources and, in some cases, purchase fuel without tenders to ensure uninterrupted domestic supply.
