The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has taken cognisance of formal charges against eight people, including former Dhaka University vice-chancellor ASM Maksud Kamal and academic Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, over alleged crimes against humanity linked to attacks on students during the July Uprising.
The tribunal also issued arrest warrants against the accused who are absconding, according to the prosecution.
The order was passed by ICT-1 on Sunday in a case concerning the alleged incitement, conspiracy and involvement in attacks on protesting students at Dhaka University on July 15, 2024. The prosecution said more than 300 students were injured in the attacks.
The eight accused are Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, former DU vice-chancellor ASM Maksud Kamal, retired Appellate Division Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, DU Sociology Professor AKM Jamal Uddin, former Bangladesh Chhatra League president Saddam Hussain, former general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, former DU unit president Mazharul Kabir Shayan and former DU unit general secretary Tanbir Hasan Shaikat.
The prosecution submitted the formal charges to the tribunal on September 16, alleging that the accused made provocative statements and played direct or indirect roles in attacks on students.
Manik, Jamal Uddin and Shaikat are currently in custody, while the remaining five accused are absconding.
The prosecution had earlier submitted the formal charges after an investigation into the alleged attacks and suppression of the student movement on the DU campus.
