The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police is currently investigating 59 cases related to the July movement, Additional Commissioner (DB) Shafiqul Islam said on Thursday.
Speaking at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre, he said the investigations are progressing in phases due to the large number of accused and the complexity of the evidence involved.
“Each case involves numerous suspects, so we are carefully verifying their locations, roles, and forensic evidence step by step,” he said in response to a question about the progress of the investigations.
Shafiqul Islam noted that investigators are working with a massive volume of data—around 40GB—linked to the incidents. “We are handling the cases with utmost importance and aim to ensure maximum punishment for those found guilty, strictly within the framework of the law,” he added.
Describing the cases as highly sensitive, he said multiple monitoring mechanisms are in place.
A dedicated cell within the DMP reviews progress every 15 days, while another monitoring unit at Police Headquarters also scrutinises the cases to ensure accuracy and fairness.
“If any case is found to have been filed with ulterior motives, we will not endorse it,” he said, assuring that only those proven guilty will be included in the charge sheets.
Responding to a question about challenges, the DB chief acknowledged several difficulties, including analysing large volumes of data, identifying suspects, and verifying differing allegations in each case.
“We are thoroughly verifying all aspects to ensure that only accurate and credible information is reflected in the investigations,” he said.
