A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, son of former Public Service Commission (PSC) driver Syed Abed Ali, to four years in prison in a case over acquiring wealth beyond his known sources of income.

The court also fined him Tk 20,000, sentencing him to an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment. It ordered the confiscation of Tk 31.81 lakh in illegally acquired assets to the state.

Divisional Special Judge BM Tarikul Kabir of Dhaka pronounced the verdict on Thursday.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi and the court’s bench assistant Ariful Islam confirmed the verdict.

Siam was a former relief and disaster management affairs secretary of the Dhaka North unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League. He was relieved of his organisational post in July 2024 after allegations emerged linking him to the PSC question paper leak scandal.

The ACC filed the case against Siam on January 5 last year. ACC Assistant Director Zakir Hossain accused him of acquiring Tk 37.30 lakh in assets beyond his known sources of income between September 2021 and June 2024.

Following an investigation, the same ACC official submitted a report identifying Tk 31.81 lakh in movable and immovable assets inconsistent with Siam’s known sources of income.

The court framed charges against him on June 17 and began the trial. The verdict was delivered after testimony from 11 witnesses.
