Police in Chattogram’s Khulshi area came under attack early Friday morning while attempting to arrest an expelled leader of the city unit of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the BNP.
At least eight police personnel, including the Khulshi police station officer-in-charge (OC), were injured, while the OC’s official vehicle was vandalised.
The incident took place around 4am at Wireless Mor and in the Pahartali area of the city.
According to police, officers were on their way to arrest Waqil Hossain, also known locally as Baga, who is wanted in an arms case, when his followers allegedly blocked the road and attacked the police.
Police said the followers chanted BNP slogans, set up barricades on the road and threw bricks and stones at the officers. At one point, the attackers allegedly hurled cocktails at the police, prompting officers to use sound grenades to bring the situation under control.
Khulshi police said a case was filed on August 30 over the alleged abduction and assault of Mizanur Rahman, a lecturer at Pahartali Degree College. The college principal was allegedly threatened during a video call while the lecturer was being assaulted. Waqil was named as the second accused in the case, along with six of his associates.
Following the filing of the case, police began efforts to arrest Waqil. Police said Waqil called Khulshi OC Abdur Rahim on Thursday to question why the case had been filed against him. During the conversation, he allegedly used abusive language and threatened the officer.
The OC reportedly informed senior police officials about the call. Subsequently, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hasan Md Shawkot Ali ordered Waqil’s arrest.
Police said Waqil began gathering his followers after learning about the planned operation. When officers arrived in the Wireless area around 4am, his followers allegedly blocked the road and attacked them.
After the situation was brought under control, police conducted raids in the surrounding alleys and at Waqil’s residence. However, police said he had already fled the area before the raids began.
The allegations against Waqil and his followers have not yet been established in court.
