US President Donald Trump has mocked Iran by labelling the Strait of Hormuz “Trump Strait” in a social media post, amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Trump shared an image of a map on his Truth Social account in the early hours of Saturday, with the strategic waterway renamed “Trump Strait”. The post came after Iran proposed reopening the strait within seven days under certain conditions.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi presented the seven-day proposal to US negotiators on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Under the proposal, Tehran would reopen the waterway and resume talks on its nuclear programme if the United States lifted its naval blockade of Iranian ports, waived oil sanctions and observed a regional ceasefire including Lebanon.

Araghchi said Iran was ready to move ahead if Washington showed seriousness about reaching an agreement and reopening the strait.

Trump, however, said he had rejected the Iranian proposal, arguing that Tehran wanted an agreement because it was under severe pressure from the conflict.

The Strait of Hormuz is a major global shipping route and a key channel for oil exports from the Gulf region.

Trump has previously used proposed geographical name changes as political messaging. In January 2025, he ordered the US government to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” in federal documents and changed Denali’s official US federal name back to Mount McKinley.
