Workers from several garment factories blocked the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road on Monday, demanding that the minimum monthly wage be set at Tk 30,000.

The blockade disrupted traffic on the busy road around noon.

According to eyewitnesses, workers gathered in the Kutubail Katharpul area of Narayanganj Sadar upazila at around 11:30am. About half an hour later, they took position on the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road and began the blockade.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Tarek Al Mehedi said police had been informed of the situation and officers had been sent to the scene.

“We have received the information. Police personnel have reached the spot and are trying to bring the situation under control through discussions with the workers,” he said.

A leader of a workers’ organisation said the workers had joined the movement spontaneously and blocked the road to press home their demand for a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000.

Workers from several garment factories in Fatullah, including Metro Knitting, Palmal Garments, Abir Fashion and Azad-Rifat Dyeing, took part in the protest.
