Ashulia police urge garment workers to avoid violence

Police are using loudspeakers in different areas of Ashulia, urging garment workers to remain calm and refrain from attacking or vandalising factories amid protests demanding a monthly minimum wage of Tk 30,000.

Workers at three factories — New Age, Al Muslim and Trouser Line — stopped work and stayed inside their factories in the morning to press their demand. However, workers at Al Muslim and New Age later resumed work, while employees at one factory continued their work stoppage.

Members of law enforcement agencies have been deployed along various roads in Ashulia since the morning, with security heightened outside several factories. Most factories were seen operating normally, with workers entering their workplaces as usual.

Police are conducting public announcements using loudspeaker-equipped auto-rickshaws and patrol vehicles. They are assuring workers that the government is sincere about addressing their demands and is taking steps to form a new wage board.

Mominul Islam, superintendent of police of the Ashulia zone of Industrial Police, said police were fully prepared to prevent any untoward incidents.

He said workers at one factory were still observing a work stoppage, while operations at the remaining factories were normal.

The police official also said garment workers had blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway near Palli Bidyut in the Sumitra area. Police were working to restore normal traffic movement.
